Washington is one of the three contagious US state with Pacific coast. Pacific Ocean is towards its west. Oregon state is towards south of it most: Columbia River forms most of their border. Idaho State is in the east of Washington. In the north it has international border with Canadian state British Columbia, remember ole name of Washington State was also Colombia. As I have told you earlier it is the most north western state of USA, the Northwestern most point lies in Olympic peninsula named Cape Flattery.

Area of Washington State is 184,665 square kilometers. It is the 8th largest state in the USA. Its area is almost equal to Arab country Syria or you can take about 90% of Pakistan province Punja ab.

Washington is home to Boeing, the world's largest aircraft maker is Boeing and it is located in Washington State. “Everett” Boeing factory site in Washington is the world's largest building, Boeing's final assembly plant. It covers around 100 acres.

State seal contains year of statehood: 1889, text "THE SEAL OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON" and image of US founder George Washington enclosed by seal text. It is the only state flag that contains US founder image. George Washington is the only president in fact person who appears on any state flag.

North West peninsular area comprises of Olympic Mountains. The Cascade Range passes from the center west. Rocky Mountains (Okanogan Highlands) passes from the northeast. Columbia plateau is in Southeast and extends into Idaho and Oregon states. Central Washington mainly comprises of Columbia basin plateau which is surrounded by Cascades range, Okanogan Highlands (Rocky Mountains) and the Blue Mountains. There are lot of water bodies in this mountainous state, there are more than 40,000 miles of rivers and streams whereas lakes count goes beyond 8,000. Columbia, Yakima and the Snake are the major rivers. Lake Franklin D. Roosevelt and Lake Washington are the prominent lakes.

Washington State Name Origin & Old Name

Washington State is named after US founder and first president George Washington. Earlier it was named Columbia name after Columbia River, here remember the Canadian Province in the north of it is the British Columbia. It is the only US state named after any president.

The primary reason behind the named change was to avoid confusion with The District of Columbia (capital of USA). The name change took place in 1853, during Millard Fillmore reign under the bill named "Washington”. Residents of Washington State are called "Washingtonians".

The area got inhabited just after the last ice age, more than 10,000 years ago, by the people came in North America by crossing the Bering Strait. It was one of the late explored areas in North America. In 1775, Spanish Captain Don Bruno de Heceta was the first European explorer who set foot here.  

Major Indian tribes have been living here includes Yakima, Chinook, Nez Perce, and Puget Sound Salish. Earlier the area was not claimed seriously by any regional colonial players like France, Spain, UK or Russia. After the independence American sent an expedition to explore the area in 1805. The first settlement in Washington was founded in 1846. The ownership was disputed between the British and Americans. In 1853 Oregon Territory signed between the two parties, according to that southern area like Washington and Oregon were deemed part of USA and UK took the took the control over the northern area.

Washington Statehood

Washington got statehood in 1889, the same year when Brazil became Republic!!!! It was the 42nd US state.

The unofficial state motto is Alki (or Al-ki), an Indian word meaning "bye and bye”.

  • Washington is the largest apple producer in the US with around 60% of overall production. Apart from apples, it is also the largest producer of red raspberries, cherries, pears, grapes and hops.
  • Washington is one of the most dam own states, there are more than 1150 dams here. Grand Coulee Dam, is the largest dam in the state. Here 124 dams in King County, most in any US county.
  • Mt. Rainier is the highest peak in the state with the height of 14,410 feet. Mt. Adams, Mt. Olympus and Mt. St. Helens are some other famous peaks.
