What is a Peninsula

A peninsula is a mass of land penetrating into a water body. In other words, it is a piece of land surrounded by water from three sides.a

The word Peninsula is formed by two Latin words

    Paene means  almost

    insula means island.

So overall becomes island like as surrounded by three side water.

Arabian Peninsula is the largest peninsula in the world, with the area of more than 3,000,000 square kilometers.

Asia and Europe are part of a single large land mass, Many people take both as a single continent called Eurasia, technically, in this case, mainland Europe is a large peninsula

Italian peninsula

Italian peninsula mainly consists of Italy and city-states San Marino and Vatican.

Iberian Peninsula

The Iberian Peninsula is at the south-west corner of Europe, consisting of Spain and Portugal. Pyrenees Mountains separates it from France.

Balkan Peninsula

Balkan Peninsula is quite famous, due to the house of multi-cultural and different ethnic groups. Historically it had been the hub of great European empires proxy wars. The term Balkanization is derived from split of this region to a number of small countries and groups.

Anatolian Peninsula

The Anatolian peninsula is part of Turkey. It has its quite ancient history. The first coin was minted by Lydian king & Lydia was located in Anatolia. The region is also known as Asia Minor. It is surrounded by Black Sea, Mediterranean, Aegean Sea and Sea of Marmara.

Crimean Peninsula

The Crimean Peninsula is surrounded by Black sea and Swa of Azov. It is strategically quite important and well renowned, historically for famous Crimean War(1853 - 1856) and currently due to Crimea crisis initiated when Russia annexed this Ukranian peninsula despite quite an opposition by West.

Other Black sea notable peninsulas are Kerch Peninsula Taman peninsula. These peninsulas are separated by Kurch strait. Kurch strait connects Sea of Azov and the Black Sea.

Scandinavian Peninsula

The Scandinavian Peninsula is located in northern Europe, consisting of Norway, Sweden and north-west part of Finland (remember Finland not part of cultural region Scandinavian). It is the largest peninsula in Europe. It is surrounded by Barents Sea (part of Arctic Ocean), Norwegian Sea, North Sea, Baltic Sea, Gulf of Bothnia, Gulf of Finland, White Sea and a couple of lakes.

Jutland Peninsula

Jutland peninsula is also located in northern Europe. The major part of its consist of Denmark whereas as small southern area belongs to Germany. It is surrounded by North Sea, Baltic Sea and a couple of straits(Skagerrak and Kattegat). Kiel Canal at the south of peninsula gives it island like look!!!!!!!!!!

Fennoscandian Peninsula

Kola is another Europian Russian peninsula, inside Arctic Circle surrounded by the White Sea and the Barents Sea. Kola, when taken a single peninsula along with Scandinavian peninsula, is called Fennoscandian Peninsula.

Some of the other small European peninsulas are Kanin(Russian), Absheron (where Baku is located), Cotentin(Normandy France) and Brittany(France)
