In this general knowledge series article, we shall see some facts related to mountains
 
Mountain
Usually, a land mass higher about 600 meters or two thousand feet from its surrounding is considered a mountain, lower than this refers as a hill.

  • Mountains stop air or slow down the air/clouds coming from ocean and cause them rain, other side remain dry. Such phenomenon we in subcontinent can observe where Himalaya mountains stop the Arabian Ocean and Bengal Gulf air and thus caused Monsson.
  • Mountains comprise about the one-fifth portion of planet's land. 
  • About 80 percent of our world fresh water comes from the mountains.
  • The Himalayan Mountain located in Tibet sacred in different religion is Mount Kailash (6,638 meters /21,778 ft)
  • The most dangerous killer mountain of Himalaya is Nanga Parbat (8,126 meters/26,660 ft) lies in Pakistan, about 70 climbers have lost their lives on it

  • The tallest mountain of the world is  Mauna Kea  (10,203 meters /33,474 ft), Pacific Ocean though from sea level its height is quite less as most of it part out of ocean is quite less as most of it is under ocean, overall its height is more than Mount Everest.
  • The tallest known mountain in the solar system is Olympus Mons (Mars). 
  • World largest monolith is Mount Augustus and the most famous monolith Ayers Rock both are located in Australia

  • Mount Everest gets higher about 4 mili-meter each year due to tectonic plates movement 
  • Perhaps the longest mountain name is Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu lies in New Zealand
  • The mountain with its peak most distant from earth centre is not Mount Everest but Mount Chimborazo located in Ecuador (due to the fact that earth is not precisely round!!!!)
