Largest Island in the world – Greenland

Greenland is the largest island in the world. IT is located in North Atlantic Ocean and part of North America. It is about 98% covered by thick ice sheet. It is not an independent country but an autonomous part of Denmark. Its area is 2,166,086 square kilometers that is almost 2.5 times of Pakistan or two-thirds of India. Despite being so large it is one of the most sparsely populated areas in the world with the population less than 60,000.

2nd largest Island - New Guinea

New Guinea the second largest island of the world is comprised of an independent country Papua New Guinea and two provinces of Indonesia: Papua and West Papua. Its area is almost equal to Pakistan. Most of the island comprises of dense mountainous forest and tribal population.

Borneo is the third largest island in the world in southwestern part of Pacific Ocean, near the Malay Archipelago. It consists of Brunei, non-peninsular Malaysia and part of Indonesia. World third largest tropical rainforest exist here. Borneo rainforest is the oldest rainforest in the world.

Banks Island is another large sparsely populated island in the Canadian Archipelago. This Arctic island is treeless and westernmost Canadian island. It is quite close to Victoria Island separated from it by the Prince of Wales Strait and separated from the mainland Canada by the Amundsen Gulf.

Sri Lanka is located in South Asia and an important member of SAARC. Its ancient name is Ceylon. Once it was connected with Indian subcontinent through Adams Bridge; most of the bridge is now submerged in the Indian Ocean.
