Florida is the southernmost state in the continental US.

Third most Populous US State

Florida is 22nd largest US state. It is the 3rd most populous state in America. Its area is 170,312 square kilometers.  Area wise it is little smaller than Uruguay.

Fourth Riches US State

Florida is economically fourth largest US state. As per its GDP, it can be ranked as the 16th richest country in the world. Its economy primarily relies on tourism, transportation, agriculture and aerospace. It is one of the least tax burden states in America. Due to relative proximity around half of all US exports to Latin America happen through Florida.

Representation in US governing and Legislative bodies

So far, there is no president from Florida in US history. There are 29 electoral votes of Florida in US presidential Electoral College. Like other states, Florida has two senators in the US Senate and 27 representatives in the US House of Representatives.

Flattest State

The terrain of Florida is quite flat, it is the flattest state of US. In fact, state highest natural point is only 345 Feet high from sea level.

Sunshine state

Florida is quite sunny weather and has earned its nickname “sunshine state”. It is 3rd sunniest US state after Arizona and Nevada.

Capital and Major Cities

Tallahassee is its capital whereas Jacksonville is the most populous city, it is the largest city in mainland US by area. Other big cities are Tampa, famous “Miami”, non-Russian “Saint Petersburg”, Orlando, Hialeah, Fort Lauderdale, Cape Coral, non-Californian “Hollywood”.

Day by day large number of Americans are moving to Florida this is due to its relatively hot weather, sunny days and mild winters. Sunny weather especially attracts the retirees. Around 1,000 people moved to Florida every day. Since 1980, its population has increased more than 100%.

Most of Florida is part of Florida peninsula, it is one of the largest peninsulas in the world. Its coastline is about 2,173 km, second to Alaska. No point in the peninsula is more than 60miles away from salt water bodies like sea, ocean or gulf.

Florida History

Florida was discovered in 1513 By Spanish Juan Ponce, it was the first area of continental America where European came. Spain established the first permanent settlement in 1565 in St. Augustine. Florida remained its colony till 1819 with a short period of British control from 1763 to 1783, In 1819 US purchased it from Spain Later, It got the statehood in 1845 as the 27th state of USA. Florida Waters

7% of Florida is under water. The length of all waterways exceeds 20,000 kilometers. There are a lot of wetlands as well, like Marshes, bogs, and swamps including one of the largest and famous Everglades wetland in Southern Florida. There are around 30,000 small and large lakes in the Florida Lake Okeechobee is the largest lake in Florida it is the second largest freshwater lake in the US.

No Dinosaur Fossils

Before 23 million years ago all of Florida was under sea whereas Dinosaurs had extinct about 66 million years ago. So there is no dinosaur remaining can be found there.

  • Florida is the largest orange producer in the US. It accounts for three-fourths of US orange production and contributes about 40% of the world’s orange juice supply.

  • In 1958, US first satellite Explorer I was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida.
